SEVENTEEN's THE 8 and Vernon to Debut as Sub-Unit V8 on June 29

The Arithmetic Behind V8
Pledis Entertainment confirmed through official channels that SEVENTEEN's new sub-unit V8 would consist of members THE 8 and Vernon. The debut album's release date was publicly set as the 29th of next month. Since SEVENTEEN debuted on May 13, 2015, as a full thirteen-member lineup, the group had moved through the BooSeokSoon (BSS) trio and its internal three-division structure—Hip-Hop Unit, Vocal Unit, and Performance Unit—before narrowing all the way down to a two-member configuration. The precise meaning of the unit name V8, as well as the tracklist, title track, concept visuals, and pre-release schedule, had not been disclosed as of this writing.
THE 8 is from Ningbo, China; Vernon is of Korean-American descent and spent his early childhood in New York. Their pairing marks the first sub-unit within SEVENTEEN composed entirely of members born outside Korea—setting it apart from the BSS (DK, Seungkwan, Hoshi) three-member vocal lineup and the BooSeokSoon three-member configuration. Pledis did not specify in its press release which of SEVENTEEN's track lines—Hip-Hop Unit, Performance Unit, or Vocal Unit—V8 derives from.

The Sub-Unit Catalogue After BSS
SEVENTEEN's first official sub-unit, BSS, launched in March 2018 with the digital single BooSeokSoon, later reaching No. 1 on Melon's daily chart in February 2023 with Fighting, the title track of their first single album SECOND WIND. V8 arrives roughly three years and four months later as the group's second official sub-unit—and the first two-member unit in SEVENTEEN's history.
The format of a two-member unit releasing a standalone album within a thirteen-member group is uncommon across the broader K-pop boy group catalogue. Among HYBE's roster, all seven members of BTS—RM, Suga, J-Hope, Jin, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—have branched out exclusively as solo acts; TXT, ENHYPEN, and TWS have no confirmed official sub-unit releases on record per available press materials. SM Entertainment's NCT unit system has precedent for two-member configurations in certain NCT U tracks, though a two-member sub-unit releasing a dedicated standalone album represents a distinct category.
80,000 in Osaka, Then Incheon Stadium
SEVENTEEN announced V8 immediately after concluding their Japan activities. On the 23rd and 24th of this month, the group held SEVENTEEN 2026 JAPAN FAN MEETING 'YAKUSOKU' at Kyocera Dome Osaka, drawing approximately 80,000 attendees over two nights. The pivot from a full thirteen-member dome fan meeting to a two-member unit reveal came in immediate succession.
The group's next scheduled appearances are stadium concerts at Incheon Asiad Main Stadium on June 20 and 21. SEVENTEEN's return to a standalone Korean stadium stage followed the trajectory established by the 2023 FOLLOW tour's Gocheok Sky Dome dates. The V8 album release date of June 29 falls within one week of those two Incheon stadium nights.

Pledis's Statement and the Blanks That Remain
Official communication distributed by Pledis in connection with V8's formation was limited to two confirmed facts: the member lineup (THE 8 and Vernon) and the album release date (June 29). Per the original press release, all of the following items were listed as "to be announced at a later date":
- Album title and title track name
- Track count and participating producer lineup
- Concept photos, trailer footage, and pre-release schedule
- Simultaneous digital and physical release details, and physical album version configurations
- Activity period and music show appearance schedule
No direct comments from THE 8 or Vernon regarding V8's formation—whether via Weverse Lives or press interviews—had been made public as of this writing. The CARAT fandom has been circulating a fan theory on social media reading V8 as "the V in Vernon and the 8 in THE 8," though Pledis has yet to issue an official confirmation.

The Arithmetic of Thirteen and the Next Tally
SEVENTEEN holds the distinction of having simultaneously debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and reached No. 1 on Japan's Oricon Weekly Albums Chart during the release week of their 2024 fourth full-length album 17 IS RIGHT HERE. V8's debut album will be the first sub-unit release within the SEVENTEEN catalogue since BSS's SECOND WIND in February 2023. The Billboard 200 is tallied weekly on the basis of SEA (Streaming Equivalent Albums) + TEA (Track Equivalent Albums) + pure sales; the Oricon Weekly is calculated from physical sales during the seven days following release.
The first data reckoning for V8 is projected to arrive seven days after the June 29 release date: the Oricon daily and weekly charts dated July 6, and the Billboard 200 for the second week of July.
